Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the team's defensive effort tonight ... "I think we paid more attention to playing better defense. When you're a good player sometimes all you do the whole game is hope you get the puck. You get it and you hope to get it. Well, during that hope time we've been giving up too many scoring chances and too many goals. We're trying to get that hope out of our game and get back to knowing when we're defending and knowing when we're attacking."
On Dylan Larkin's play ... "Dylan's been skating lights out every game. Some nights the pucks are going in for him, but he's been a force and that line between him and (Zach) Hyman and now (Justin) Selman on the wing, they're giving us a lot of offensive leadership. They're making our team a better team."
On why the connection between Zach Hyman and Dylan Larkin has worked so well ... "They're both good players. I knew Zach would have a good year. I don't know if he'd be as good without Dylan. I was hoping Dylan would have a good year. I just think it's worked. Whether it's been in practice, whether it's been a little bit of leadership by a senior, whether it's just the chemistry, they both play well off each other and they're playing the right way so good for them. They had Alex Kile on the line for the first half of the year, now (Justin) Selman's on the line. It's a good line to play on."
On the team's penalty killing effort ... "There was a lot of hard work. I think our team really knuckled down when we got that five-minute major and that really helped us. Sometimes that can be a motivator for your team to even play harder and be more desperate. You know you're playing defense then and you're outnumbered and you have to play well. Our guys did a good job."
U-M Senior Forward Zach Hyman
On returning to Yost ... "It's awesome. The season's winding down and the last place you want to play is away. Being at Yost is awesome and we love playing here."
On what is clicking so well with Dylan ... "We've been together since the start of the year, so every game I think that we've gotten better. We're great friends off the ice and we have chemistry there. It just carries over onto the ice and we're starting to know where each other are. I mean Dylan threw that puck and he knew I was going to be there. We've been making plays together all year."
U-M Freshman Forward Dylan Larkin
On the difference in tonight's game ... "I think our defense was the difference for us. We had a meeting Saturday and a lot of guys bought in and you could see it on the ice. We had some good chances come from hard work back and it was a good team effort."
On his night tonight ... "I was skating well and had really good support from my buddy (Zach) Hyman. On the first goal, just playing on our chemistry I just threw it and I knew he was going to be there and it was going in. We had a good night and more importantly we weren't out for any goals. It was good to help the team."
U-M Freshman Defenseman Zach Werenski
On the importance of tonight's win after the loss on Friday ... "It was huge. We got swept by Minnesota and we lost to Ohio State on Friday so to get this win and get back in first place is huge for us."
On the success of the penalty kill and the overall defensive effort ... "Not to give up penalty kill goals is definitely a key to a big win. We got a couple of power-play goals so our special teams were great for us tonight."
