Michigan improved to 151-129-19 all-time against Michigan State, with a 46-64-9 record at Munn Ice Arena. Michigan snapped a five-game road winless streak with the win tonight. The Wolverines have won two of the last three meetings between the two teams at Munn Ice Arena. Michigan has played Michigan State in more games than another team in program history.
Michigan's win coupled with Minnesota's win over Penn State moves the Wolverines (12-7-0-0 Big Ten, 36 points) into a tie for first place in the Big Ten standings with the Gophers (11-5-3-0 Big Ten, 36 points), ahead of Michigan State (10-7-2-2 Big Ten, 34 points). The first tie-breaker in the Big Ten standings is regulation wins in conference play.
Michigan reached 20 wins for the first time since the 2011-12 season and for the 26th time in the 31-year tenure of Michigan head coach Red Berenson.
Dexter Dancs recorded his first career multiple-point effort (G, A), and scored his first goal since Jan. 16 at Ohio State. All three of Dancs' goals this season have come in road contests.
Senior Travis Lynch scored his first career game-winning goal tonight. Lynch now has points in three straight games (G, 2A).
Three Michigan players have point streaks of three games or more, led by JT Compher (five games, 7G, 2A) and Andrew Copp (five games, G, 5A). Tyler Motte (four games, G, 3A) matched a career high with his ninth goal of the season tonight.
Zach Hyman (assist tonight) needs one point to become the first Michigan player to top 50 points in a single season since Carl Hagelin, who had 50 points (19G, 31A) in 2009-10. Hyman leads the Big Ten in scoring with 49 points (19G, 30A). Hyman entered this season with 35 points (13G, 22A) in his first three seasons combined.
Hyman is the first Michigan player to reach 30 assists in a season since Carl Hagelin had 31 assists in 2010-11.
Cutler Martin's goal gives Michigan defensemen 21 goals in 33 games this season. In 2013-14, Michigan defensemen scored eight goals in 35 games.
With an assist tonight, Andrew Copp has 30 points (14G, 16A) on the season, setting a new single-season career high.
