ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A trio of former University of Michigan men's soccer players have signed professional contracts with teams in the United Soccer League (USL) this week. Goalkeeper Adam Grinwis and midfielder Marcos Ugarte signed with the Rochester Rhinos (New England Revolution affiliate), while midfielder Tyler Arnone signed with Real Monarchs SLC, an affiliate of MLS club Real Salt Lake.
Grinwis spent all five years of his college career in Ann Arbor and was a co-captain during his final two seasons. He holds the Michigan career record for saves in a game (12) and ranks second in school history in career saves (261) and third all-time in shutouts (14). Grinwis also received numerous Big Ten accolades throughout his career.
Ugarte split his collegiate career between Providence and Michigan, spending his last two seasons in Ann Arbor. He scored eight goals during his time at Providence and added three more with the Wolverines, including a memorable bender from the top corner of the box against Oakland during his senior year. In all, Ugarte appeared in 30 matches for Michigan, 21 of which were starts.
Arnone, a team co-captain during his senior year, has been the Wolverines' anchor in the midfield for the past four seasons. He went on to be named All-Big Ten three times, just the fourth player in Michigan history to do so. He ranks No. 8 all-time in assists (14), No. 9 in shots attempted (145), No. 5 in matches started (75) and No. 4 in minutes played (6,621). In addition to his All-Big Ten honors, Arnone received a number of preseason and postseason awards during his career, including Big Ten Midfielder of the Year in 2013 and First Team All-Senior CLASS in 2014.
