Wolverines Suffer Conference Defeat at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Kevin Wong and freshman Runhao Hua each earned singles wins, but the University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Indiana on Friday (April 17) at the IU Tennis Center.
Indiana gained momentum from the get-go, earning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. In the first match off the court, the IU tandem of Daniel Bednarczyk and Sam Monette notched an 8-3 win over Michigan's top duo of seniors Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu. Shortly thereafter, Sven Lalic and Raheel Manji defeated the Wolverine pair of redshirt freshman Davis Crocker and sophomore Tyler Gardiner, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot. Hua and redshirt freshman Alex Knight were tied 4-4 with Chris Essick and Stefan Lugonjic at No. 2 when the match was abandoned.
The Hoosiers transferred the success over from doubles into singles and won consecutive matches in straight sets at the Nos. 2, 5 and 1 positions to clinch the match. After the match was decided, Michigan earned victories at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Hua earned his team-best 16th dual-match victory of the season, downing Lalic, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7), and Wong notched a 7-5, 6-4 win over Lugonjic at the No. 6 spot.
The Wolverines close out their regular-season schedule on Sunday (April 19), traveling to West Lafayette, Indiana, to take on Purdue at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
