COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan softball team knocked out three home runs to claim a 10-2, six-inning victory over Maryland on Saturday afternoon (April 25) at the Maryland Softball Complex.
Junior centerfielder Sierra Lawrence, junior second baseman Sierra Romero and sophomore second baseman Abby Ramirez -- U-M's No. 1, No. 2 and No. 9 hitters -- all tallied two hits and two runs batted in. Lawrence and Romero both bombed out home runs, as did junior rightfielder Kelsey Susalla. Sophomore leftfielder Kelly Christner also posted two hits and an RBI.
Senior LHP Haylie Wagner (19-2) earned the complete-game victory from the circle, striking out seven Terrapin batters while scattering seven hits. Both of Maryland's runs came on solo homers -- in the fourth and sixth innings.
After leaving two stranded in the first, U-M took advantage of Maryland miscues to break through with a three-run second. Sophomore third baseman Lindsay Montemarano reached on a muffed throw at first base, advanced on a passed ball and flyout before coming for the Wolverines' first run when Ramirez smacked an RBI single through the left side. Lawrence connected with the 0-1 pitch in the next at-bat to bomb a two-run homer deep over the leftfield fence -- her 12th long ball of the season.
The Wolverines plated three more in the fourth inning. Freshman designated player Aidan Falk shook off a pitch off her hand smack a leadoff single through the right side. Her pinch runner, junior Mary Sbonek, advanced on a sac bunt and raced home when Ramirez sent the first pitch deep into the left centerfield gap. Romero homered two batters later to pad U-M's lead to 6-1, knocking a two-run blast over the centerfield fence. It is her 17th home run of the season, tying Christner for the Wolverine team lead.
Michigan pushed the game into the run-rule territory with a four-run sixth inning. Christner made the Terrapins pay for back-to-back walks, ripping an RBI single through the right side. Susalla went long in the next at-bat, connecting with the 1-1 pitch and driving it over the centerfield fence. It marks her 12th homer of the season.
The Terrapins cut the deficit with a solo homer with no outs in the home half of the inning, but U-M earned its three outs on a groundout, three-pitch strikeout and a Susalla shoestring catch in rightfield.
The Wolverines will wrap up their three-game series at Maryland tomorrow (Sunday, April 26) with a 1 p.m. slate at the Maryland Softball Complex in College Park, Maryland. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
