NEWBURGH, Ind. -- With a pair of two-under 70s from junior Chris O'Neill and sophomore Reed Hrynewich, the University of Michigan men's golf team bounced back today (Saturday, April 25), posting a two-under 286 to move up two spots and sit 11th after 54 holes of the Big Ten Championships being played at Victoria National.
The Wolverines will conclude the conference tournament with a final 18 holes tomorrow (Sunday, April 26) starting off the 10th tee with Michigan State and Maryland beginning at 8:40 a.m.
U-M got off to a slow start yesterday (Friday, April 24), posting a 307 in its opening round, and started the second round before darkness halted play. With the field returning early this morning to finish the second 18, the Wolverines tallied a 308 to sit 13th with 36 holes remaining.
In today's round, the Wolverine starting five posted 18 total birdies, matching the total number of birdies (18) U-M combined for during the first two rounds. Led by two-under 70s from O'Neill and Hrynewich and adding an even-par 72 from sophomore Bryce Evon and a two-over 74 from freshman Kyle Mueller, the Maize and Blue bounced back, dropping more than 20 shots from the second round with a two-under 286 team total to move into 11th with one day left. With today's tally, the Wolverines are now just nine shots back of cracking the top five.
Individually, O'Neill is pacing the Wolverines as he is among the top 20 individually with a 220 (74-76-70), putting him tied for 17th. With his even-par 72, Evon is tied for 32nd at 225 (77-76-72), and Hrynewich's two-under 70 helped him crack the top 50 as he is tied for 45th at 228 (79-79-70).
In his first conference tournament, Mueller is tied for 47th at 229 (77-78-74), while junior Brett McIntosh rounds out the starting five, sitting tied for 52nd at 232 (79-78-75).

Michigan's third-round two-under 286 is the fourth team round posting under par this season. U-M had a season-best 278 (-6) in the first round of the Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 6-7), along with a 280 (-4) in the second round. U-M's third sub-par team tally was a 285 (-3) in the final round of the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 6-7).
Chris O'Neill's two-under 70 is his seventh sub-par round of the season. Reed Hrynewich's matching two-under 70 is his sixth red number this season. Kyle Mueller still leads U-M with nine sub-par rounds this season.
Chris O'Neill and Brett McIntosh are playing in their third Big Ten Championships, while Reed Hrynewich is playing in his second. Kyle Mueller and Bryce Evon are competing in their first conference tournament.
