ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The NCAA national office released the 2013-14 Academic Progress Rate (APR) data and penalty reports for all Division I institutions on Wednesday (May 27) as part of the annual NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program. All 29 University of Michigan varsity athletic teams currently reporting multi-year scores were well above the threshold required by the NCAA, including five teams with perfect multi-year scores: men's cross country, women's golf, women's gymnastics, softball and women's indoor track & field.
The report is based on four-year calculations of data from the 2010-11 through 2013-14 academic years and includes U-M's 29th varsity team, women's lacrosse, which recently concluded its second year of NCAA competition.
Michigan is one of just four schools from the Bowl Subdivision to earn a multi-year score of 990 or greater in the sport of football. U-M is one of just two schools nationally to record at least a 990 in football and a 995 in men's basketball (Duke). U-M is the only school to achieve the above marks in addition to a 995 or greater in women's basketball.
Additionally, all 14 U-M men's varsity athletic teams recorded perfect 2013-14 scores while 10 of the 15 women's varsity teams also earned perfect scores. Last year, U-M enjoyed 13 perfect scores across its programs.
The APR is a real-time measure of a team's academic performance and is calculated by reviewing variables such as eligibility, retention and graduation rates of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team.
For 2015-16 and beyond, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships. All U-M varsity teams currently have multi-year APR rates of 950 or higher.
On May 20, the U-M football, men's basketball, men's cross country, women's golf, men's gymnastics, women's gymnastics, softball, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field and men's wrestling teams were recognized by the NCAA with the Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Award for ranking among the top 10 percent of their respective sports in the most recent multi-year APR report. The 10 awards marked an institutional record.
Michigan is the only Big Ten Conference institution to earn recognition awards in both football and men's basketball, with men's basketball now having earned the award in four straight years.
