ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its spring 2015 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Thursday (May 28), which includes 121 University of Michigan student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. All told this year, U-M student-athletes garnered 260 academic honors from the conference.
The No. 3-ranked Michigan softball team features seven Academic All-Big Ten selections, led by recently named NFCA All-American Kelly Christner. Christner has enjoyed a breakout season for the Wolverines, starting all 62 games and hitting .404 with 20 HR and 63 RBI. Also earning the honor were Lauren Sweet (.324, 11 HR, 52 RBI), Kelsey Susalla (.380, 14 HR, 57 RBI) and Abby Ramirez (.357, 2 HR, 22 RBI), each of whom earned NFCA All-Region honors. The Wolverines open play at the 2015 Women's College World Series on Thursday night (May 28) against No. 6 Alabama (6 p.m. CDT, ESPN2).
In addition, all six eligible members of the Big Ten champion women's tennis team were honored, headlined by Big Ten Player of the Year Emina Bektas. She leaves Michigan ranked No. 1 in singles wins (129), second in doubles wins (119) and first in combined wins (258).
Three members of the Big Ten Tournament champion baseball team received Academic All-Big Ten recognition, including seniors Eric Jacobson and Kendall Patrick. The Wolverines, who are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008, open NCAA Regional play against Bradley on Friday (May 29) in Louisville, Kentucky.
The rowing team had the most selections of any spring sport (23), including six members of the team's 2V8 boat that won gold at the Big Ten Championships on May 17: Francesca Derteano, Adena Coste, Lexie Beemer, Allison Boss, Kinsey Vear and Susie Stevens. The sixth-ranked rowers compete at the NCAA Championships beginning on Friday (May 29) in Gold River, California.
The men's and women's track and field teams combined for 29 Academic All-Big Ten selections, including 11 student-athletes that are slated to compete at the NCAA East Regional, which begins Thursday in Jacksonville, Florida. Among the honorees include individual Big Ten champions Cindy Ofili (indoor: 60-meter hurdles; outdoor: 100-meter hurdles) and Erin Finn (10,000-meter run) on the women's side, as well as men's distance runner Mason Ferlic (indoor: 5,000-meter run; outdoor: 3,000-meter steeplechase).
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the fall and winter seasons, and the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
