ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan sophomore Kelly Christner was voted to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America Division I softball third team, announced Friday (May 29) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Christner, a movement science major, is the 12th different Wolverine softball player to earn Academic All-America honors in program history and the second in as many years. She was one of only four sophomores to make the 2015 academic teams. She also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors this season and is a two-time recipient of the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award.
Named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first team earlier this week, Christner owns a .407 batting average with 21 home runs and 64 RBI in her first season in the Wolverine starting lineup. She drove in U-M's game-winning run in its Women's College World Series opener last night (Thursday, May 28) against Alabama on a first-inning solo home run.
Academic All-Americans are selected after a voting process at the district level. Those who are named to all-district first teams advance to the All-America ballot. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
CoSIDA has selected Academic All-America teams since 1952. Currently, there are 12 teams named: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) divisions.
