ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Chris O'Neill and freshman Kyle Mueller of the University of Michigan men's golf team were selected to the PING Division I All-Midwest Region team today (Saturday, May 30) by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
O'Neill and Mueller's inclusion gives U-M a pair of Wolverines selected for an all-region team for the second straight season. O'Neill and Brett McIntosh earned the honor last year. Overall, they are the 12th and 13th U-M golfers to be given the honors since 2008, and their recognition gives head coach Chris Whitten eight All-Midwest golfers in as many years with the U-M program.
The Wolverine duo helped the Maize and Blue capture a sweep of the team and individual titles in the season-opening Wolverine Intercollegiate (Sept. 6-7). Mueller captured his first career win in his first collegiate event, while O'Neill was sixth guiding U-M to a 10-shot team win.
Together O'Neill and Mueller helped the Michigan collect five top-five finishes, close as the runner-up at the Big Ten Match Play Championships (Feb 14-15) and the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 6-7) and earn its first trip to an NCAA Regional in four years. Mueller then became the 10th Wolverine to advance to the NCAA Finals as an individual after his runner-up finish at the regional.
O'Neill extended his consecutive-start streak to 36 events over his three years after starting 12 events. He finished his third season averaging 73.15 strokes per round and leading U-M in four events, including a 17th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships (April 24-26). He fired a career-best six-under 65 in the first round of the Wolverine Invitational, the second-lowest tally in U-M history.
In his first season in Ann Arbor, Mueller earned All-Big Ten second team honors after starting 13 events. He led the Wolverines with a 72.56 per-round average, which ranks as the seventh lowest in school history and is nearly a full stroke better than the U-M freshman record (73.54) set by Matt Thompson in 2008-09. He posted 11 sub-par rounds, including a career-best six-under 66 fired May 15 in the second round of the NCAA Washington Regional. He led U-M with a 4-0 match-play record.
A total of 155 players were honored across six regions: Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West.
