GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Using a two-under 70, University of Michigan women's golfer Catherine Peters claimed medalist honors in the collegiate qualifier for the 2015 Meijer LPGA Classic today (Tuesday, June 23) at the Blythefield Country Club.
Northwestern's Kaitlyn Park earned the second spot after shooting a 72, while Wolverines Grace Choi and Megan Kim each fired rounds of 76. Peters and Park will now compete in the LPGA event held Tuesday through Sunday, July 21-26 back at the Blythefield Country Club.
Starting on the sixth hole of the shotgun formatted qualifier, Peters struck early with a birdie on the 10th hole to go one under, before a bogey on the 12th drew her back to even. After parring her next seven holes, she sank her second birdie of the round on No. 2 to move back into the red. Two more pars and a closing third birdie on her final hole, No. 5, positioned her at two under as she claimed the top spot by two strokes.

Nearly 35 competitors from Big Ten schools Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State and Wisconsin as well as local universities Ferris State, Grand Valley State and Davenport played for two exempted spots to play in the July LPGA event.
Peters is the second Wolverine to compete in the Meijer LPGA Classic after Choi and MSU's Lindsey McPherson were given exemptions to last year's event.

On winning the collegiate qualifier ... "Honestly, it really hasn't sunk in that I am actually going to play in this (LPGA) event. Coming off the course and having made that final birdie, I told myself that two under is going to be close. I said to myself there has to be some low scores out there. I mean just knowing the caliber of girls that were playing in this event and the quality of the players competing in the Big Ten, I really didn't know. It is nice to see all the work I have put in this summer paying off. I did have the expectation of playing well in this qualifier, but going into today, I really didn't expect to come out as the medalist. I just wanted to go out and show that I could hold my own in this field."
On who will be on her bag for LPGA event ... "Oh, my dad (Dale) will be doing that for me."
