GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- Using a 15-under tournament total, University of Michigan men's golfer Tom Swanson captured the 2015 Montana Men's State Amateur by seven shots over runner-up Ryan Porch at the Meadow Lark Country Club on Saturday, July 25.
Swanson set the pace early as he opened play Thursday (July 23) firing a seven-under 65 after posting seven birdies, 11 pars on his scorecard. Framing his opening nine holes with a birdie on the first hole and the ninth, he made the turn two under. Midway through his back nine, he caught fire making five straight birdies to tally his seven-under 65 and take an early five-shot lead over the 180-player field.
Maintaining his momentum to start Friday's (July 24) second round, he played the front side at five under after birdies on Nos. 3, 5 and 7 followed with an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. After recording his first bogey on the tournament on the 10th hole, he quickly erased the blemish with another birdie on the 11th. A second eagle on the 13th had him seven under as he looks to repeat his opening round tally. However, a bogey on 15th gave a shot back as he finish with a six-under 66 keeping him with a six-shot lead with a 13-under 131 total.
With a large lead, Swanson battled Meadow Lark through his Saturday final round. After birdieing three of his opening four holes, he found himself making the turn at one under after three bogeys and a fourth birdie were etched onto his card.
A triple bogey on the 10th he moved above par for the first time during the event. Swanson did not let it last as he posted two birdies over his next three holes to bring his round back even. Adding two more birdies on Nos. 15 and 17, he finished with a two-under 70 to win by seven shots with a 15-under 201 tally.
