ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday (July 8) its 2015 Distinguished Scholar Award recipients, a list that includes 57 University of Michigan student-athletes. To receive the prestigious honor, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.
This year, Michigan had 34 women and 23 men representing 20 varsity sports. The list includes four of the school's eight 2014-15 Academic All-Americans: senior Sammy Gray (field hockey), senior Zach Hyman (ice hockey), junior Mason Ferlic (men's track and field/cross country) and senior Justin Glanda (men's swimming and diving). Hyman was the University of Michigan's 2014-15 Male Athlete of the Year, while Glanda was the school's male recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor and a Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship.
The women's soccer team had the most honorees with seven, led by junior Corinne Harris, an All-Big Ten second team selection. The men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for 11 selections (six men, five women), including Anders Nielsen, a four-time NCAA All-American and national runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle in 2015. The men's and women's track and field teams each had four recipients, highlighted by Ferlic and Erin Finn, an NCAA All-American in the outdoor 5,000-meter run. Rowing (six) and wrestling (four) were also well represented on the final list.
Michigan's 57 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars are its most in the seven years of the award. The total number of U-M recipients has increased in each of the past five years: 37 (2011), 49 (2012), 53 (2013), 55 (2014), 57 (2015).
