ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team jumped out to a two-goal halftime lead en route to a 3-1 win over Central Michigan on Thursday (Sept. 10) at U-M Soccer Stadium to improve to 5-2 in non-conference play. Freshman Abby Kastroll led the Wolverines with one goal and one assist, while sophomore Taylor Timko and senior captain Corinne Harris also contributed a goal in the win.
Timko got Michigan on the board in the 20th minute, as she fired a low shot that bounced off the inside of the post and into the goal at 19:52.
Less than 10 minute later (28:21), Michigan struck again to take a 2-0 lead. A failed clear by a Central Michigan defender went high and spun back over her head, where junior Nicky Waldeck flicked a header toward Kastroll making a run into the box. Kastroll ran onto it and volleyed it out of the air into the back of the net.
The Wolverines outshot the Chippewas, 10-1, in the first half and took a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, U-M nearly took a three-goal lead when Timko crossed a ball from the left touch line to junior/sophomore Ani Sarkisian, but her shot went just wide right.
Central Michigan soon capitalized on an opportunity in the 64th minute and cut Michigan's lead to one, 2-1. A ball bounced around just outside U-M's own penalty box, and CMU's Eliza Van de Kerkhove launched a shot over the head of U-M keeper Megan Hinz.
Michigan's defense responded and did not allow CMU to tie the match. In the 77th minute, Kastroll created another scoring opportunity, carrying the ball down to the right touch line and sending a cross on the turf back toward the far post, where Harris stepped up and knocked it inside the far post to push U-M's lead to 3-1.
"It was awesome to see Corinne put one in," said head coach Greg Ryan. "She does everything for us -- she's all over the park, winning every ball, pressuring, and keeps us in possession. She got two great chances tonight and on the second one stepped up and took it well. I'm really proud of her; she's a senior captain, and this is what you want to see -- someone stepping up and changing the game."
The Wolverines outshot the Chips, 24-4, en route to the 3-1 victory, while CMU's only shot on goal produced its lone goal of the night.
"Credit Central for how they played us tonight," said Ryan. "They made some really good adjustments -- they played a very defensive strategy and sat really low. Teams are going to do that against us, and we have to get better at playing against teams that are sitting in and looking to counter, but at the end of 90 minutes we have 24 shots, three good goals and several other chances."
Michigan will now travel to South Bend, Indiana, to take on its first ranked opponent of the season in No. 13 Notre Dame (5-0-1) on Sunday (Sept. 13) at 5 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
