COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team, playing in front of a raucous crowd of 6,294 fans, fought to a 0-0 draw against the No. 4-ranked Maryland Terrapins Friday (Sept. 11) at Maryland's Ludwig Field.
U-M outshot the Terps, the NCAA shot leader heading into the match, by a 15-12 shot margin and had 7-3 corner advantage in the match and outplayed the Big Ten preseason favorites in the opening half. The Wolverines owned several quality chances on goal and were even 6-6 on shots and owned a 4-0 corner kick advantage in the opening stanza.
The first chance for the Wolverines came in the 21st minute on a corner from the foot of junior Rylee Woods, as the in-swinging service found the head of senior Colin McAtee. The bounding McAtee connected with a powerful header just outside the six, but the attempt went narrowly wide right off side netting.
Michigan's best sequence of the half came nearly 11 minutes later, as U-M won a pair of corners, the latter almost resulting the breakthrough for U-M. The outswinging corner from Woods landed free at the top of the 18 and was collected by senior William Mellors-Blair, who struck the half volley that deflected just high of the bar.
The Terrapins earned a quality chance in the 34th minute, its best of the half, on a header from attacking midfielder Mael Corboz. The headed try from just inside the area was collected by sophomore goalkeeper Evan Louro, who had a trio of stops in the first half of action.
In the second, U-M had its first chances in the 57th minute, as a free kick from junior Lars Eckenrode behind midfield found McAtee at the top of the six with a defender draped on his back, but the one touch side volley was deflected for a corner. On the ensuing sequence, another corner from Woods found junior Andre Morris eight yards out, and the right-footed strike with the outside of his foot had Terp goalkeeper Colin Neidermier beat but was cleared off the goal line to safety by a Terrapin defender.
It was not until the 69th minute that Maryland earned its first corner of the night, but it was quickly cleared to safety. Momentum seemed to swing U-M's way once again in the 75th, as a reckless challenge on a 50-50 header resulted sophomore Billy Stevens being struck in the face by Jorge Calix, who saw a red card, and brought Maryland down to 10 men the rest of the match.
However, it was Maryland that earned two quality chances a man down, both courtesy of Corboz. The first in the 84th minute from was from 22 yards out that was punched away by Louro, and the latter in the 88th from 20 yards out that was taken care of by the U-M back line as the match headed into overtime.
U-M outshot the Terps, 5-0, in the first overtime session, but neither team was able to find the breakthrough as the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
