The Inverness Intercollegiate History
Michigan has played in four previous Inverness Intercollegiate since the tournament began in 2000.
U-M competed in the inaugural event in 2000, tying for ninth (306-298-305/909). Playing as an individual, Scott Hayes won the event after finishing with an even-par 213 (71-72-70) and winning in a scorecard playoff.
Seven years later, the Wolverines returned to the event, finishing 15th (307-297-305/909) in 2007.
The Maize and Blue had back-to-back appearances in 2011 (301) and 2012 (297-291-312/900).
The Wolverines had a fifth visit to the Inverness Club during the 2009 NCAA Championships. Finishing sixth (296-285-287/868) in the stroke-play team qualifier, U-M was as a national semifinalist in the new match-play format to determine the team champion. Michigan defeated USC, 3-2, in the quarterfinal before losing to eventual national champion Texas A&M, 3-1-1, in the semifinal. [ NCAA Finals | MP: USC | MP: Texas A&M ]
WOLVERINE BITES
Michigan has only two current starters who have played the Inverness Club. During the 2012 event and in his collegiate debut, then-freshman Brett McIntosh nearly won, tying for third with a three-over 216 (71-70-75). Fellow then-newcomer Chris O'Neill was 51st at 233 (79-74-80). [ Recap ]
Michigan is in a stretch of three straight competitive weekends. After tying for 11th in the opening Gopher Invitational (Sept. 13-14), the Wolverines play this weekend at Toledo's Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 21-22). U-M closes the stretch heading to the Windon Memorial Classic (Sept. 27-28). Overall, the Maize and Blue will evenly split its fall and spring season with five regular-season events in each.
Tom Swanson opened his third season in grand style, finishing as the top Wolverine at the Gopher Invitational. He carded a career-best 218 (75-72-71) to tie for sixth -- his first collegiate top-25 finish. Swanson's previous best finish was tying for 26th at the 2014 NXY Hoosier Invitational (April 12-13).
Tom Swanson is the first Wolverine to lead U-M at an event not named Chris O'Neill or Kyle Mueller since early March 2015. The last player to lead U-M not part of that Wolverine duo was Reed Hrynewich at the 2015 Puerto Rico Classic (Feb. 22-24).
Chris O'Neill made his 37th consecutive start at the Gopher Invitational and has yet to miss an event in his four-year career. He is expected to extend that streak this week with the Inverness Intercollegiate. Kyle Mueller has started the first 14 straight tournaments of his young career.
Nick Carlson, who is expected to make his second straight start, made his collegiate debut at the Gopher Invitational. He finished 58th with a 228 total. After opening with a windy 81 in his first collegiate round, he rallied with rounds of 75 and a one-over 72 to finish at 228.
Michigan has had at least one freshman start the season opening event over the last four years -- Nick Carlson (2015 Gopher Invitational); Kyle Mueller (2014 Wolverine Intercollegiate); Bryce Evon and Reed Hrynewich (2013 Wolverine Intercollegiate) and Brett McIntosh and Chris O'Neill (2012 Inverness Intercollegiate).
LAST TIME OUT
With an career-best performance by Tom Swanson, Michigan opened the season tying for 11th with an 895 total at Minnesota's Gopher Invitational (Sept. 13-14) played at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
