DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team improved to 10-0 on the season after a three-set victory (25-19, 25-20, 25-21) over Duke on Friday night (Sept. 18) at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Timeouts proved to be very beneficial for Michigan in the first set. Trailing 9-5 with only one kill early in the first set, head coach Mark Rosen called his first timeout. Coming out of the huddle, Michigan started to click on all cylinders. The Wolverines scored 10 of the next 11 points to open up a 15-10 lead.
Later in the first set, the Blue Devils were on a 4-0 run when Rosen called his second timeout. The message in the huddle again inspired the Wolverines as they came out and closed out the first set with six of the next seven points for a 25-19 win.
U-M took advantage of 10 attack errors by Duke in the first-set win. A balanced Michigan attack saw four players with two kills, while sophomore Caroline Knop led the way with four kills.
The second set was back and forth with the score tied at 7-7 and 15-15. The hot hand early for the Wolverines belonged to sophomore Adeja Lambert, who had five of Michigan's first 10 kills. U-M then got contributions from all over the court as it opened up a 22-16 lead.
Three straight points by Duke caused a timeout by Michigan. Just as they did in the first set, the Wolverines rallied to close out the set, scoring three of the last four points and closing out the set on a Blue Devil attack error.
The third set was dead even at 12-12 when Michigan went on its run, scoring six of seven points to open up an 18-13 lead. The run was keyed by two blocks from senior Krystalyn Goode that fired up the Michigan fan base in attendance.
Duke started to make a late run, but a monster kill by junior Abby Cole set up match point, and a serve into the net gave the Wolverines the third set victory, 25-21.
Lambert led the team with 13 kills and a .393 hitting percentage. Goode tallied six kills and three blocks, while Cole recorded seven kills.
Michigan will return to action for its second Big Ten/ACC Challenge match tomorrow night (Saturday, Sept. 19) at North Carolina at 6:30 p.m. in Carmichael Arena in Chapel Hill.
