MANHEIM, Pa. -- Junior Adam Coon of the University of Michigan wrestling team has been selected to participate in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's 50th annual All-Star Classic. The event will be held on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Georgia Tech's McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta, Georgia.
The NWCA All-Star Classic pits the nation's top collegiate wrestlers against each other in challenge matches that are often seen as a preview of the NCAA Championships.
Coon, the 2015 NCAA heavyweight runner-up, will square off against Virginia Tech's Ty Walz in the heavyweight bout -- the first of all-star matchups to be announced. Walz, also a junior, took seventh place at last season's NCAA Championships. He defeated Coon in their only previous meeting, earning a 5-3 overtime decision Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational semifinals last December.
Coon boasted an impressive 32-5 record last season, including a 12-1 mark in dual meets. He is the 33rd Michigan wrestler to earn an NWCA All-Star selection and will be the first to compete since Steve Luke went in 2008. Kellen Russell earned an invitation in 2011 but did not compete due to injury.
