ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Abby Cole notched her second double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 blocks, and freshman Carly Skjodt added 11 kills to lead the 22nd-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team to its first Big Ten win of the season, a four-set triumph (25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16) over Indiana Saturday (Sept. 26) at Cliff Keen Arena. The win marks Michigan's eighth in the last nine meetings with the Hoosiers and helps the Wolverines improve to 7-1 at home this season.
Cole had one of the most impressive nights of her career, matching a career high in blocks and recording no attack errors for a hitting percentage of .636. Senior Krystalyn Goode matched a career high with seven kills, Caroline Knop added eight kills and 10 digs, and setter Carly Warner had 25 assists for U-M. Amelia Anderson led the visiting Hoosiers with 16 kills. Michigan held Indiana to a .125 hitting percentage for the night, as the Hoosiers made 30 errors to Michigan's 14. The Wolverines had a .336 hitting percentage for the night, including a .600 mark in the decisive fourth set (14 kills, 2 errors).
Michigan took the opening set by running out to a 14-8 lead, then holding off an IU rally midway through the frame. With the Hoosiers within three at 14-11, Cole ended the run with a kill, and IU got no closer the rest of the way. U-M had 11 total kills in the set with just two errors and notched a .450 hitting percentage. The Wolverines also capitalized on a match-high 11 errors by the Hoosiers in the set. Goode led the Wolverines with three kills in the frame, as Michigan won five points on blocks in the set.
The Wolverines appeared to be destined for a two-set lead, leading 15-8 in the middle of the second frame, but the Hoosiers stormed back, winning eight straight points to take a 16-15 lead. Trailing 24-21 late in the set, Michigan won two straight points on a Knop kill and an Indiana attack error to force a Hoosiers timeout. But Skjodt's attack down the line sailed just long to give Indiana the set. The Hoosiers' much improved effort on the attack included 17 kills with just five errors in the frame for a .293 hitting percentage. Knop led the Wolverines with six kills in the set.
Indiana kept it close early in the third set, trailing by four at 13-9, before the Wolverines won six of the next seven points to take control. Cole closed out the set with her team-leading fifth kill of the frame as Michigan held Indiana to a -.032 hitting percentage.
In the fourth set, Michigan went on a run midway through frame with both teams trading points early on. With U-M holding an 8-7 lead, the Wolverines won the next six points to stretch the lead to 14-7 on Cole's final kill of the night. Indiana came as close as five at 20-15, but Michigan won five of the next six points, taking the match on an IU service error.
