After three straight games against nationally ranked conference foes, the University of Michigan men's basketball team (13-5, 3-2 B1G) returns to Crisler Center for a home contest against Minnesota (6-12, 0-6 B1G). The Wolverines will be looking to make it eight straight wins at home Wednesday night (Jan. 20) in a game set to be televised live on Big Ten Network at 8:30 p.m.
THE HEAD COACH MATCHUP
Michigan: John Beilein (179-115 in ninth season at U-M | 730-343 in 38th season)
Minnesota: Richard Pitino (49-39 in third season at Minnesota | 67-53 in fourth season)
A LITTLE ABOUT MINNESOTA
Minnesota comes to Ann Arbor with a 6-12 overall record and a 0-6 B1G mark. The Gophers have dropped their last seven games. Minnesota's last win was Dec. 16 against Chicago State (70-52).
Minnesota averages 69.9 points and 33.6 rebounds per game. Overall, the Gophers are shooting 41.1 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from long range.
The Gophers have four players averaging in double figures led by senior forward Joey King's 12.9 points per game. King also leads from long range with 40 three-pointers and a 46.5 percentage. Sophomore guard Nate Mason is producing 12.3 points per game and a team-best 3.9 assists per game, while senior guard Carlos Morris is at 10.8 ppg, and freshman forward Jordan Murphy is at 10.5 ppg and a team-best 8.1 rebounds per game.
THE SERIES WITH MINNESOTA
Today's game is the 155th all-time meeting. Michigan leads the all-time series -- 89-65.
U-M has won the last seven games in the series; as well as 11 of the last 12.
In Ann Arbor, U-M has a 54-20 all-time record; including three straight at Crisler Center.
In the only meeting last season, Michigan came back from a second-half deficit to defeat Minnesota, 62-57, at Crisler Center (Jan. 10). Down 49-40 with less than nine minutes remaining, the Wolverines fought back and went on a 22-8 game closing run to help them to the win. Derrick Walton Jr. led with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists. Caris LeVert chipped in 15 points, while Zak Irvin and Ricky Doyle each had 12.
MICHIGAN INSIDER
U-M has been without the services of senior guard Caris LeVert for the last four games. The Wolverines have gone 2-2 without him. LeVert continues to be listed day to day with the lower left leg injury suffered in the final minutes of the Big Ten opener at Illinois (Dec. 30).
Michigan's 49.7 percentage from the floor ranks eighth nationally and third in the Big Ten, and U-M's 42.2 three-point percentage is also eighth nationally but second in the B1G.
U-M has won the last seven games at Crisler Center.
Michigan has made 10 or more three-pointers in its last seven straight games.
Duncan Robinson has made at least two three-point field goals in his last 14 straight games.
WHAT'S AHEAD?
After a gauntlet of three nationally ranked teams, Michigan begins a four-game stretch of Wednesday/Saturday matchups. U-M begins hosting Minnesota at Crisler Center (Wednesday, Jan. 20) before heading to play at Nebraska (Saturday, Jan. 23) in Lincoln, Nebraska, for just the second time as conference foes.
The following week, Michigan has a midweek battle against Rutgers (Wednesday, Jan. 27) at Crisler before heading to the Big Apple for the B1G Super Saturday battle with Penn State (Saturday, Jan. 30) at Madison Square Garden. The MSG game is a doubleheader of hoops at noon and hockey at 7 p.m.
