ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a matchup of top-20 teams, the 16th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the 12th-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team by a 4-2 score on Sunday (Jan. 31) before a crowd of 456 fans at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines lost the doubles point and were unable to rally in singles, managing victories at the second and third singles slots.
Ohio State won the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup. The match at No. 1 was abandoned with the score 5-5. The Wolverines held a 40-15 advantage on serve at that point.
OSU then picked up victories at No. 6, No. 4 and No. 1 singles to secure the 4-2 win. The match at No. 5 was abandoned once the outcome was determined.
Brienne Minor picked up Michigan's first point of the match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Ohio State's Gabriella De Santis at No. 2 singles. Kate Fahey rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to win the tie-breaker, 7-2. She proceeded to battle with Anna Sanford in the second set, much like the first, and secured the second team point with an identical 7-2 victory in the second set tie-breaker. Fahey won the match 7-6(2), 7-6(2).
Due to conference scheduling, this will be the only meeting between the Wolverines and Buckeyes. The coaches agreed to a non-conference dual match after the two rivals were not scheduled to face each other during the 11-match Big Ten regular season.
