Kornacki Postgame Feature: Mitchell Could Be X-Factor for Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team rallied from down 17 with 8:18 remaining the third quarter to overtake Iowa (RV AP, No. 23 Coaches), 82-75, on Thursday evening (Jan. 7) inside Crisler Center. U-M outscored Iowa, 30-13, in the final quarter and took the lead for good on a sophomore Katelynn Flaherty layup with 1:19 left.
Flaherty paced the Wolverine offense, scoring 24 points on 11-for-20 shooting. Senior Kelsey Mitchell, making her fourth start this season, had the first double-double of her career with new career highs in points (14) and rebounds (11). Senior Madison Ristovski joined them in double figures, scoring 11 points. Four other Wolverines -- freshman Hallie Thome (8), junior Danielle Williams (7), sophomore Jillian Dunston (7) and freshman Nicole Munger (7) -- had at least seven points as U-M shot 52.2 percent (35-for-67) from the floor in the game.
Iowa kept a double-digit lead in the opening moments of the fourth quarter, before a layup from Dunston with 7:36 left, followed by a steal-and-score in the backcourt from freshman Sam Trammel got the Maize and Blue within seven points, 69-62. Following an Iowa timeout, the Hawkeye lead hovered between five and seven points for the next two minutes.
Michigan took its first lead since the second quarter on a Mitchell layup, assisted by junior Siera Thompson, at the 1:51 mark. Iowa scored on its next possession to regain the lead, but Michigan took the lead for good when Flaherty canned a layup with 1:19 to go. Mitchell rebounded an errant Flaherty triple on U-M's next possession and made the putback to push the Michigan lead to three. Iowa did not score the rest of the game as U-M ended on an 8-0 run.
Iowa scored the first six points of the third quarter, resulting in a Wolverine timeout just 1:10 into the frame as U-M was down 49-34.
Back-to-back three-point plays, from Ristovski and Flaherty, followed by a Flaherty baseline jumper brought Michigan back within single digits at 51-42 with 4:57 on the third-quarter clock. Dunston took a charge to negate an Iowa score, and Mitchell scored on a rip and go from the free throw line to get within seven, 51-44. Michigan got no closer in the third as Iowa took a 10-point lead, 62-52, into the fourth.
The Wolverines grabbed a 25-21 lead at the 7:06 mark of the second quarter on a layup from Mitchell. Iowa responded with a 12-0 run for a 33-25 lead off a triple from Alexa Kastanek to force a U-M timeout.
Michigan closed within three points, 35-32, on a Ristovski layup, but Iowa answered with an 8-0 run for a 43-32 lead with 43 seconds remaining before the half. Flaherty scored on a lefty runner to send Michigan to the locker room facing a 43-34 deficit.
Flaherty led the way for Michigan with nine first-half points, with Thome scoring eight, Ristovski seven and Mitchell had six in her return to the starting lineup. Michigan shot 48.4 percent (15-for-31) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while Iowa hit at 50 percent (16-for-32) and made 7-of-16 triples. The Hawkeyes held a slight 15-13 advantage on the glass in the first half.
Michigan is back in action on Sunday (Jan. 10), traveling to Minnesota to take on the Gophers. Tip is set for 2 p.m. CST.
