ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team outshot the No. 2-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 13-12, but a pair of Fighting Irish goals proved to be the difference, as the Wolverines fell, 2-0, Tuesday (Oct. 11) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

The Wolverines burst out of the gates early on, registering the first six shots of the match. Additionally, U-M earned four corners in the opening 25 minutes. The best chance of the opening portion of the match came in the 15th minute, as sophomore Robbie Mertz and freshman Jack Hallahan linked up on the right flank. Hallahan the cut in on his left foot, but his shot was smothered by Notre Dame goalkeeper Chris Hubbard near post.
The Fighting Irish got on the board first in the 30th minute as one of the nation's top offensive threats Jon Gallagher turned on a defender 20 yards out and ripped a right-footed shot that rang off the crossbar. The ensuing rebound was then headed home by an opportunistic Mark Gormley; the goal came on Notre Dame's second shot of the night.
Michigan then dodged a bullet in the 39th minute, as a header from Brandon Aubrey was cleared off the line by Mertz. U-M trailed 1-0 at the half and was even on shots at 7-7 as well as shots on goal.
Notre Dame found more of itself in the second half, limiting the quality of the U-M chances. However, sophomore Francis Atuahene found space in the 70th minute. With his right foot, he took a touch at the top of the box in a dangerous position, but the shot was blocked out of bounds for a corner.
Twelve minutes later, Gallagher put the match out of reach on a 1-2 ball from Jack Casey at the top right of the 18. Casey fed a low ball, and it was finished with power right side to bring the match to its final resting place of 2-0.
Next up, the Wolverines hit the road for the final time this regular season, traveling to Willamsburg, Virginia, to take on the William & Mary Tribe on Saturday (Oct. 15) at 7 p.m.
