CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- With three Wolverines among the top 50 individually, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed with an 894 team total and finished 12th at the prestigious Ruth's Chris Invitational held at North Carolina's Finley Golf Course.
"It was an honor to compete in this field, and it was a heck of an opportunity for us," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We had some good moments, but we didn't bring our best consistently throughout the weekend. The great thing about playing in a field like this is you learn where your shortcomings are, and that should motivate us."
"We really did stay patient all week," added Dowling. "Our first nine holes were never very good, but we seemed to battle back every day on the back nine. Even with a freshmen and sophomore in the lineup, that takes a lot of maturity."
With 12 of the top-45 ranked teams playing in the 18-team field, the 43rd-ranked Wolverines used an opening 73 (+1) from sophomore Elodie Van Dievoet and 74s from senior Grace Choi and junior Megan Kim to begin the event and produce U-M's top team total of the weekend at 296, positioning themselves 10th.
As U-M settled into the event, junior Emily White guided the Wolverines on day two, with a season-best-tying 73 (+1), while freshman Alisa Snyder followed producing her career best with a 74 (+2) in her first career start. Despite those two tallies, the Maize and Blue tallied a 298 team total and fell one spot to 11th after 36 holes.
In today's final round, Choi, who tied for 31st at 222, and Kim, who tied for 37th at 223, led the Maize and Blue with 73s as U-M posted its first 300 tally of the fall, giving the Wolverines an 894 event total and dropping a spot to a final 12th-place finish. Rounding out U-M's top three individuals, White finished with a season-best-tying 224 total and tie for 45th.
"We know what each individual players' short coming are, and we have a three week break to really develop," said Dowling. "This tournament should motivate the team. We are happy for this time. Our last event is at SMU (in Dallas), and we will be ready to compete."
The Wolverines are away from competition until early November. U-M will close the fall season traveling Choi's hometown of Dallas for SMU's Trinity Forest Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 7-8. The two-day, 54-hole event will be held at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
