ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team led by as much as 19 points late in the second half and eventually earned a 12-point victory over IUPUI on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 13) inside Crisler Center to wrap up the 2K Classic Ann Arbor Regional with a 2-0 mark.
Four Wolverines finished the game with double-digit points, led by 15 points from Zak Irvin. Moritz Wagner and Derrick Walton Jr. each recorded 13 points, and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman chipped in with 12. D.J. Wilson finished just shy of a double-double for the second straight game, posting a game-high 14 rebounds and seven points, and he added five blocks. Wilson has 15 points and 23 rebounds through two games this season. The Wolverines outrebounded the Jaguars, 40-31, and produced 19 second-chance points while holding IUPUI to just two.
After going up 9-6 in the early going, IUPUI got into an offensive rhythm and built as much as a seven-point lead on a Darell Combs three-pointer at the 13:04 mark. The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes until U-M hit back-to-back buckets, including a thrilling follow-up dunk from Wilson on a Walton miss in transition, to bring Michigan within one, 20-19. Walton then hit three-pointers on each side of the eight-minute media timeout to regain the lead for the Wolverines, 27-24, with 6:58 left to play in the first half.
The Jaguars briefly stole the lead, 32-20, at the 4:18 mark, before Michigan erupted on a 13-0 run to close the opening half with a 43-32 advantage. Four different U-M players scored during that stretch, led by five points from Abdur-Rahkman.
Early in the second half, Wagner and Walton helped Michigan maintain a double-digit lead, combining for U-M's first 12 points of the half, as Wagner produced seven, and Walton had five. Wagner's old fashioned three-point play gave the Maize and Blue a 55-40 lead with 15:30 left on the clock.
Just before the four-minute media timeout, Wagner and Wilson each hit their first three-pointers of the game to push Michigan's lead to 18, 74-56. The Wolverines led by as much as 19, 77-58, with 1:39 remaining, but IUPUI closed the gap, scoring the final seven points in the game, including five free throws, to give U-M a 12-point victory.
Overall, Michigan shot 45 percent (27-for-60) from the field today, with its free throw shooting being a bright spot for the second straight game. Through the first two games of the season, U-M is 39-for-44 (89 percent) from the free throw line, led by Walton, who is a perfect 10-for-10, including 4-for-4 this afternoon.
The Wolverines hosted their second Military Appreciation Day today, honoring active duty and veterans of the military throughout the game, highlighted by an Army vs. Navy wheelchair basketball game at halftime.

Michigan will now prepare for its first road game of the season, traveling to the Big Apple to compete in the 2K Classic Championship Round. U-M will kick things off with a matchup against Marquette on Thursday Nov. 17) at 9:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden. The Wolverines will then face either Pittsburgh vs. SMU game on Friday (Nov. 18). Under head coach John Beilein, Michigan is 4-1 in games played in New York City.
