GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team (3-3-1, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) makes a trip out west for its first-ever matchup with the newest member of NCAA DI men's hockey Arizona State University Sun Devils (1-7-0). The Friday (Nov. 4) matchup begins at 7:05 p.m. MST (10:05 p.m. EDT) at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Michigan heads out west for the final game of a three-game road trip, facing another new opponent in Arizona State.
The Wolverines look to rebound from a tough weekend, suffering their first consecutive losses since losing three straight from Feb. 26-March 4 last season.
Arizona State plays a full Division I schedule for the first time in program history. They played as a member of the ACHA Division I from 1993 until 2014, appearing in 10 national tournaments and winning the 2013 national championship. In 2015-16, the team played a split schedule between ACHA and NCAA opponents as a transitional season to D1 hockey.
Junior defenseman Sam Piazza has recorded at least one point in three of his last four games and is tied for a team high in points (6), goals (3) and power-play goals (2).
Freshman netminders Jack LaFontaine and Hayden Lavigne have seen the bulk of the action between the pipes for the Maize and Blue; both are tied for a team-high games played (3) entering the weekend. Lavigne currently ranks 15th in NCAA DI with a 2.00 goals-against average and seventh in save percentage (.944), while Lafontaine is 11th in save percentage (.936).
UP AHEAD: The Wolverines return to Yost for a five-game homestand, their longest of the season, opening with Boston University (Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m.). Michigan and BU have met each year for the last three years, and Michigan owns a perfect 5-0-0 record against the Terriers at Yost. [ Tickets ]
