ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team outscored Western Michigan by 14 points (23-9) in the third quarter en route to a 66-40 win over the Broncos on Monday night (Nov. 21) inside Crisler Center.
The Wolverines' 23-point third quarter turned a two-point halftime lead into a 49-33 advantage after 30 minutes. Junior Katelynn Flaherty scored seven points in the third stanza, with sophomore Hallie Thome and freshman Kayla Robbins each chipping in five.
Senior Siera Thompson led the way for the Maize and Blue, turning in a game-high 16 points to go with six assists and four rebounds. Flaherty put in 15 points and Thome scored 11 with five boards and three blocks. Junior Jillian Dunston grabbed 12 rebounds with four points, and Robbins contributed eight points and seven rebounds in 12 minutes of action.
Michigan fell behind 6-0 in the early minutes of the game before taking a 7-6 lead on a Thompson triple with 5:22 on the clock. WMU led after one quarter, 13-12, as U-M committed eight turnovers in the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with the Wolverines taking a 26-24 halftime lead on a Robbins basket as time expired.
Following Michigan's big third quarter, the Wolverines kept it going in the final period. U-M outscored the Broncos, 17-7, in the fourth to hold WMU to just 16 second-half points.
Michigan will head to the Virgin Islands this week for three games in the Paradise Jam. U-M will first face No. 25 Gonzaga on Thursday (Nov. 24) at 9 p.m. AST (8 p.m. EST).
