ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team was defeated by Lake Superior State, 3-1 on Friday night (Nov. 25) at Yost Ice Arena. The Lakers broke a 1-1 tie with just under three minutes remaining in the contest to come away with the win.
The teams headed to the dressing room in a 0-0 tie after the first period, and the score remained until the 11:51 mark of the second period when Tony Calderone beat Lakers goalie Gordon Defiel five-hole to notch his fifth goal of the season. The power-play marker was Michigan's 11th of the season.
The lead did not last long, however, as 23 seconds later Lake Superior State's Josh Nenadal scored from the low slot, capitalizing on a pass from Gus Correale. The rest of the period played out with continuous back-and-forth action with both teams failing to find the back of the net. Goalie Jack LaFontaine was sharp in net, stopping 10 of the 11 second-period shots including a nice glove save 6:57 into the period.
LaFontaine came up big again in the third period, shutting the door on a Lake Superior State shorthanded breakaway opportunity to keep the game tied at one.
Later on, however, Luke Morgan broke the tie for the Lakers, beating LaFontaine on a two-on-one opportunity with just under three minutes to go in regulation.
Despite having a power-play chance with an extra attacker with 1:52 to go, Michigan was unable to tie the game, and Gus Correale scored an empty-net goal to make it a 3-1 final.
With the loss, Michigan drops to 61-48-7 all-time against the Lakers and 5-5-1 overall on the season.
The two teams will square off tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 26) to conclude the weekend series with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop at Yost Ice Arena.
