MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a closely contested match, 1-0, to No. 8 Minnesota on an early goal in the eighth minute in the semifinals of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament on Friday (Nov. 4) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
The Gophers tallied the game's lone goal early in the eighth minute on their first shot on goal. Minnesota's Josee Stiever stripped Michigan of the ball near the right sideline and carried the ball toward the goal. Stiever put a low-angle shot off the right post, but it bounced back to the middle, and Julianna Gerner tapped it in from close range.
Minnesota controlled the majority of possession in the first 45 minutes, outshooting U-M 7-3, including 3-1 in shots on goal.
Michigan switched to a more offensive formation in the second half to create more chances in behind Minnesota's defense. In the 54th minute, sophomore Reilly Martin put a 40-yard free kick into the box that fell to the feet of sophomore Abby Kastroll, but Kastroll's shot went just over the crossbar.
Sophomore/junior goalkeeper Sarah Jackson and Michigan's defense held Minnesota without a goal for the final 82 minutes, but the Wolverines could not find the equalizer. Overall, Jackson made four saves in goal for Michigan.
The Wolverines were held scoreless for just the third time this season -- two of those coming against Minnesota.
Michigan will now wait to see if it will earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show will take place on Monday (Nov. 7) at 4:30 p.m. It will be shown live on NCAA.com.
