CLEVELAND, Ohio -- University of Michigan senior captain Brian Murphy dropped his 157-pound matchup at the 51st National Wrestling Coaches Association's All-Star Classic, falling to NC State's Max Rohskopf on a third-period pin on Saturday night (Nov. 5) at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center.
Murphy led the bout, 6-4, at the time of the fall and was in deep on a low single when Rohskopf countered him in a body lock, trapped the arm and earned the fall at the 5:43 mark. The Wolverine captain pushed the pace throughout, scoring on a double-leg takedown midway through the first period and nearly finishing on a fireman's carry at the first-period buzzer -- that was ruled a takedown then waved off. He reversed Rohskopf to his back for four points early in the second but was reversed back and ridden out. After giving up a quick escape in the third, he quickly fired off two single-leg shots, getting in trouble on the latter to give up the match-ending fall.
Murphy is the 37th Michigan wrestler to complete in the NWCA All-Star Classic and the fourth over the last two seasons. Wolverine wrestlers are 15-19-3 all-time at the event, dating back to 1967.
The Wolverines will kick off the dual-meet portion of their 2016-17 season on Friday (Nov. 11), hosting Virginia at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available through the Michigan Ticket Office.
