DETROIT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team was defeated by Michigan Tech University, 2-0, in the first semifinal match-up of the 52nd annual Great Lakes Invitational on Thursday (Dec. 29) at Joe Louis Arena.
Michigan Tech opened the scoring 5:46 into the first period when sophomore defenseman Dane Birks had the redirect off a Mark Aut shot from the point.
Michigan was unable to capitalize on a two-man advantage late in the first stanza, despite holding control in the attacking zone and creating multiple scoring chances.
After getting a power-play goal waived off due to a high stick, the Huskies were able to double their lead (2-0) at the 11:19 mark of the second period on a Cliff Watson goal from the left faceoff dot.
Despite outshooting the Huskies 12-10 in the final period, the Wolverines were unable to mount a comeback, as Michigan Tech netminder Angus Redmond came up with key saves in the waning minutes of the contest.
Freshman goaltender Hayden Lavigne registered 36 saves in the losing effort and fell to 4-3 on the season. Sophomore Cooper Marody had a team-high five shots in his first game of season.
Michigan is now 125-94-5 in the 234-game history against Michigan Tech, the third-most games played against any program (Michigan State 300, Minnesota 269).
Michigan will conclude the 52nd annual Great Lakes Invitational tomorrow (Friday, Dec. 30) against Michigan State, a 4-1 loser to Western Michigan, in the first contest of the day. Faceoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m in the final GLI at Joe Louis Arena.
