SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team raced out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back in a 92-57 win over San Diego State on Friday afternoon (Dec. 9) at Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena.
Playing in her home state of California for the first time, senior Siera Thompson turned in the first double-double of her career with 11 points and a career-high 11 assists. Junior Katelynn Flaherty scored a game-high 21 points and matched her career high with seven helpers. Freshman Kysre Gondrezick went for 18 points off the bench, while sophomore Hallie Thome had 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Freshman Akienreh Johnson turned in career highs in both points (10) and rebounds (7), and classmate KeAsja Peace turned in eight points, two boards and a block. Michigan shot 56.9 percent (37-for-65) from the floor and an even 50.0 percent (11-for-22) from three-point range.
Michigan took a 9-0 lead on four points from Thome and five straight from Thompson to force an SDSU timeout at the 6:13 mark. U-M took a 12-0 lead on a Flaherty triple and the lead never dipped below double figures the rest of the way.
U-M pushed its lead to 22-4 on a pair Gondrezick triples, a Thompson jumper and a Thome layup with 3:23 remaining in the first quarter. U-M's lead stayed at 16, 29-13, when freshman Kayla Robbins put in a layup to beat the first-quarter horn.
Michigan hit the break with a 49-31 lead behind a balanced first-half attack. Thome had 12 points, Flaherty went for 11, and Gondrezick had eight, with Thompson and Johnson each chipping in seven.
The Wolverines did not let up in the third quarter, outscoring the Aztecs 29-12 in the period. Michigan led by as many as 39 points in the contest and never trailed. Michigan's bench accounted for 40 points, and the Wolverines got 21 points off 19 SDSU turnovers.
Michigan wraps up its road swing on Sunday (Dec. 11), playing at No. 9 UCLA at 11 a.m.
