ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team had a pair of 10-0 runs in the third and fourth quarters to rally for an 82-65 win over Wisconsin on Thursday evening (Feb. 11) inside Crisler Center.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty led all scorers with 23 points, scoring 20 in the second half as U-M outscored the Badgers by 18 in the final 20 minutes. Freshman Hallie Thome went for 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while junior Siera Thompson had 15 points and seven assists. Freshman Boogie Brozoski added nine points and four assists in her second straight start, with senior Kelsey Mitchell going for seven points and eight boards off the bench.
Flaherty converted an acrobatic three-point play on a lefty layup with 3:52 on the third quarter clock to give Michigan a 50-45 lead. Flaherty found Thome over the top on the next play before hitting a stepback three to cap a 10-run, giving Michigan a 55-45 lead with 2:23 left in third quarter and force Wisconsin timeout. The teams traded baskets the rest of the period as Michigan headed to the fourth with a 59-51 lead.
With the Wolverines clinging to a five-point lead with 5:05 left, Thompson went on her own 5-0 spurt on a coast-to-coast layup and a triple to beat the shot clock to put U-M back on top by 10, 72-62. Brozoski followed that by finding Thome in transition for the finish, pushing Michigan's lead to 12, 74-62, with 2:51 left. Michigan's run continued as Flaherty canned a triple with 1:59 on the clock, putting the Wolverines ahead by 15 to cap another 10-0 run. Wisconsin got no closer than 12 points the rest of the way as Michigan made five of its six free throws to seal the 17-point win.
A three-point play from sophomore Maria Backman with 3:10 remaining on the second-quarter clock put Michigan back in front by a point, 35-34. The teams combined for just three more points the rest of the quarter as the Wolverines trailed by one point, 37-36, at the half. U-M got 12 points from Thome, eight from Thompson and seven from Mitchell. Michigan made 12-of-26 field goals in the first 20 minutes for a 46.2 shooting percentage, while Wisconsin hit 53.8 percent (14-for-26) of its shots.
Michigan hits the road for two straight games, first traveling to Purdue on Sunday (Feb. 14). Tip is set for 2 p.m.
