ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team outscored Oregon 4-3 in the second half but could not overcome a 6-1 first-half run by the Ducks that gave them a 9-7 halftime lead, as Oregon squeaked out the 12-11 win in its 2016 season opener on Friday (Feb. 19) inside Oosterbaan Field House.
Junior Jess Angerman led Michigan with four goals, helping her become the first Wolverine in program history to reach the 100-point milestone. She now has 101 points in her U-M career. Holly Johnson led Oregon with a team-best four goals.
Oregon put the first tally on the board just 1:30 into the game, but Michigan responded with three unanswered goals, which was capped by junior attacker Bianca Brueckner's first career goal, to take a 3-1 lead at the 24:00 mark. The Wolverines then scored three of the next five goals to take its largest lead of the game, 6-3, when junior attacker Tess Korten wrapped around the goal and slipped in a low-angle shot with 11:38 remaining in the half. Three of U-M's first six goal came on free-position attempts.
The Ducks then closed the half by scoring six goals in the final 10 and a half minutes, including one with one tick left on the clock, while Angerman was the only Wolverine to find the back of the net during that stretch. The 6-1 run by Oregon gave it a 9-7 lead at the halftime break.
Oregon opened the scoring in the first half to take its largest lead of the team, 10-7, before Angerman netted an unassisted goal to end nearly a nine-minute scoring drought for the Wolverines.
The teams traded goals and Oregon once again pushed its lead to three goals, 12-9, with 7:29 left in the game. Michigan then responded with two straight goals, including a defensive goal from junior attacker Allie Breitfeller, when she caused a Duck turnover deep in its own zone and capitalized. U-M trailed by just one goal with 1:48 remaining and won the ensuing draw control, but could not maintain possession and Oregon held on for the 12-11 win.
The Maize and Blue controlled the draw for the third straight game, holding a 17-7 advantage. Juniors Kim Coughlan and Anna Schueler recorded six and five draw controls, respectively, matching their efforts from the last game against Florida.
