
Michigan Drops Regular-Season Finale at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team fell in a three-point hole at the end of the first quarter and could not recover, dropping a 72-50 contest at Rutgers on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 28) at The RAC.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty scored a team-high 21 points for her 18th 20-point contest of the season. Freshman Hallie Thome chipped in nine points as Michigan was held to its lowest scoring output of the season. Senior Madison Ristovski grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds as Michigan held a 39-31 advantage on the glass.
The Wolverines took a 9-8 lead in the early going on a Thome layup with 3:21 on the first-quarter clock. Rutgers scored the last four points of the frame, including a buzzer-beating jumper from Tyler Scaife to take a 12-9 advantage into the second quarter.
A three-point play from Flaherty at the 3:31 mark of the second quarter brought Michigan back within five, 23-18. Rutgers went on an 11-5 spurt into the half and took a 34-23 lead into the break.
Rutgers scored first out of the break, but Michigan changed defenses and got back within seven points, 36-29, on a Flaherty jumper with 5:38 remaining in the third. Junior Siera Thompson came away with a steal on the next Rutgers possession, and Michigan had two looks at the basket before turning the ball over to Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights scored four straight to regain a double-digit lead.
Thompson banked one off the glass from the top of the key as time expired in the third, and U-M entered the final quarter down by 12, 50-38.
The Scarlet Knights scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter and led by as many as 24 in the final frame.
Michigan will be the No. 8 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis, Indiana, and will play No. 9 seed Iowa in the second round at noon Thursday (March 3) on Big Ten Network.
