
Bastien, Wolverines Off to Strong Start in Akron

AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team began competition at the Akron Invitational on Friday (Feb. 5), highlighted by a strong start for senior/junior Steven Bastien in his first heptathlon of the season. In the Zips' Stiles Athletics Field House, Bastien put himself in great position at the end of the first day of action, scoring 3,061 points to sit in third place, just three points out of the runner-up spot.
Bastien won the 60-meter dash in 7.05 to begin the day on a high note, but his true highlight of the day came in the shot put, when his throw of 12.85 meters (42-1.75 ft.) set a new PR on his first attempt. He was runner-up in the long jump as well, jumping 6.97 meters (22-10.25 ft.), and finished sixth in the high jump.
Sophomores Ben Hester and Charlie DeJonge are also competing for U-M, with 2,738 and 2,656 points, respectively, through day one. DeJonge recorded a PR in the long jump, while Hester set an indoor-best mark in the high jump.
U-M resumes action at Stiles Athletic Field House Saturday morning (Feb. 6). The second day of events will be split into morning and afternoon sessions, with Derek Sievers competing in the shot put at 10 a.m. to lead things off for the Maize and Blue. Video will be available on gozips.com.
