ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team opened the 2016 season with a dominating 14-1 win over first-year program Central Michigan (0-1) on Sunday (Feb. 7) inside Oosterbaan Field House.
Junior Natalie Carti led the Wolverines with a career-high four goals, while fellow classmates Jess Angerman, Tess Korten and Kim Coughlan each added three goals apiece. Freshman goalie Mira Shane made her Michigan debut, making seven saves and allowing no goals in 54 minutes of work.
Michigan's defensive pressure led to success on the offensive throughout the game, including its first goal of the season. Carti forced a Chippewa turnover on the ride deep in CMU's own zone, and Carti picked it up and went straight to goal, giving U-M an early 1-0 lead just 1:22 into the game. Seven minutes later, Angerman notched her first goal of the season after receiving a feed from Anna Schueler behind the cage.
U-M hit the post twice in the first 18 minutes but eventually pushed its lead to 5-0 by the 5:10 mark, after back-to-back unassisted goals from Angerman and Coughlan. Junior Tess Korten found the back of the net with less than a second left on the clock to give the Maize and Blue a 6-0 advantage at the half.
U-M's defensive pressure once again led to a goal at the start of the second half. Junior Allie Breitfeller hounded CMU goalie Dominique Hammon on the crease, knocked down a clear attempt and immediately put the ball in the goal to make it 7-0 U-M with 29:04 to play. A little more than two minutes later, another turnover by CMU's goalie left a loose ball for Korten to pick up right in front of the goal, which led to Michigan's eighth straight score.
A free-position goal from Coughlan gave the Wolverines a 9-0 lead, before Central Michigan scored its first goal in program history to make it 9-1 (23:56). Freshman goalie Alli Kothari came out of the cage and inadvertently went down, leaving a loose ball for Kaitlin Kimble, who scooped it up for the quick score.
The Wolverines closed the game on a 5-0 run, including three straight goals from Carti, to produce the final score of 14-1. In total, 22 different players saw game action today, including seven freshmen who made their career debut in Maize and Blue.
