CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team got a pair of wins at the top of the singles lineup but it was not enough in a 4-2 loss to No. 10-ranked Virginia at the Snyder Tennis Center.
Michigan dropped the doubles point, losing at No. 1 and No. 2 as Virginia took the early lead.
The Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 3. The Wolverines won the next two singles matches, tying the match at 2-2.
Freshman Brienne Minor, playing in her first career match at the No. 1 position, knocked off No. 4 Danielle Collins in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0, for the first point of the day for the Maize and Blue.
Senior Ronit Yurovsky accounted for Michigan's next point, taking a 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 13-ranked Julia Elbaba at No. 2.
Michigan entered third sets at No. 5 and No. 6, keeping the Wolverines in the match. Junior Sara Remynse won her first match before falling in the second at No. 5. Freshman Teona Velehorschi rebounded from a 6-0 loss in the first to win 6-1 in the second.
Neither Wolverine could find their footing in their respective third sets as Virginia took both matches to seal the 4-2 win.
Michigan kicks off Big Ten action next Saturday (March 19) at Michigan State. The match is slated for 2 p.m.
