TUCSON, Ariz. -- Led by top-15 finishers senior Catherine Peters (tied-13th) and junior Grace Choi (tied-15th), the University of Michigan women's golf team tallied an 888 54-hole total today (Tuesday, March 15) and closed eighth at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational played at Sewailo Golf Club.
The Wolverines opened Arizona's two-day event Monday (March 14) with a 294 first-round total and finished the day shooting 300 in the second round for a 594 first-day team total. Through 36 holes, the Wolverines were tied for ninth among the 15-team field.
"As a team, we didn't quite bring our A-game," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "However, our team finish was a true team effort. We had different players step up at the right time to help us. This team has high expectations for themselves, and they weren't pleased with the result. Overall, the team needs to take care of the simple little things to continue improving. We made some big numbers out there, which is easy to do in the desert, and we need to take advantage of the easy chips and judge our lag putts a bit better. With all that said, I'm loving how we are progressing and fighting out on the course. The pins were set very tough in the find round and we finished strong to leap-frog some teams."
In the first day of competition, Peters finished the day shooting two over par -- highlighted by a two-under 70 in the first round. With a perfect par-72 score and four birdies in the final round of play, Peters finished the tournament two over.
"It was another great week for Cat," said Dowling. "She hit the ball well all three rounds and her course management has improved over the last three years. She eliminated big mistakes and capitalized on her birdie opportunities. She is really having a fantastic year and we've relied on her consistent scoring."
Choi finished the first round on Monday at even par and carded a two-under 70 in the second round. The junior shot on par through 14 holes on Tuesday and finished just three over in the tournament.
"Grace really had a great week, and I hope she is able to look at her first two rounds and gain confidence," said Dowling. "She didn't finish the tournament how she would like in the final round, but her 70 in round two in the wind was impressive. She's a grinder with a great mental game that allows her to shoot the lowest score she can every time she tees it up."
Sophomore Emily White finished third for the Wolverines, posting a 75 (+3) in the third and final round on Monday, shooting eight birdies throughout the tournament.
Highlighting Michigan's third round on Tuesday with three birdies for a 74 (+2) was sophomore Megan Kim. She also recorded an eagle in the first round of play and finished play on Tuesday with eight birdies through the three rounds. Sophomore Kathy Lim also shot her best round on Tuesday, posting a 73 (+1) with three birdies and 12 shots on par.
"We are looking forward to a multi-week break to catch our breath and work on our games," said Dowling. "We have a big event at the Bryan National which will prepare us well for the Big Ten Conference championship and beyond."
The Wolverines will close their regular season at the beginning of April with they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, Friday through Sunday (April 1-3) for the Bryan National Collegiate. The three-day, 54-hole event hosted by Wake Forest and UNC Greensboro will be held at the prestigious Bryan Park Golf Course.
