Cole's School Record Lifts U-M to Win over No. 19 UIC on Senior Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team swept all six events, featuring a school record on vault from freshman Emyre Cole (15.50), as the Wolverines downed the UIC Flames, 429.750-368.000, Saturday (March 26) on Senior Night at Cliff Keen Arena.
Additionally, a trio of seniors in Michael Strathern, Nolan Novak and Colin Mahar competed in their final U-M home meet, with all three winning an event title on their respective events.
To begin the meet, the Wolverines (5-9) started off strong on floor exercise with explosive tumbles, complex combination passes and clean lines to post a 72.550 team score and an early 12-point lead over the Flames. Adam Dean stuck his triple fold dismount, earning him a 15.05 and a new career high by .55. Cole's big tumbles earned him a 15.00, his second- highest score of the season. Anthony McCallum also stuck his dismount for a 14.05 in the exhibition spot.
Moving to pommel horse, Novak captured the team's best performance with tight scissor and circle work, adding a 14.55 to the team's tally of 66.900. Samuel Su's 13.80 in the leadoff spot on horse was .05 short of his career best.
On still rings, U-M registered a 72.800, anchored by McCallum, who set a new career high of 15.10, and Mahar, who stuck his dismount and tied his career-high 15.60 from last week against Penn State. Though the UIC Flames put up their highest score of the contest on vault with a 66.000, the Wolverines extended their lead.
In the fourth rotation on vault, the Wolverines' 74.600 was a season high. They were paced by Cole, who stuck his landing and broke the school record with his massive 15.50 score. McCallum, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA on vault, helped bolster U-M's strong performance with a 15.25.
Continuing on parallel bars, McCallum registered his second-best score of the season with a 15.05. Belanovksi notched a 14.95, contributing to U-M's 72.850 total, which is just shy of the team season high of 72.900.
To close out the regular season on horizontal bar, co-captain Strathern stuck his dismount and set a career-high 15.25 in his final home meet. McCallum, who conversely completed his first home campaign, also stuck his dismount for a 15.15. U-M secured a strong 70.050 to finish off the victorious effort.
U-M swept the 1-2-3 positions of every event. Dean earned his first event title on floor, Novak earned his fifth pommel horse event title, Mahar earned his second event title on rings for a second week in a row, and Strathern captured his third event title ever on horizontal bar. McCallum's 86.45 in the all-around was his career best, while Cole earned the Newt Loken Award for his record-setting performance on the table.
With the regular season complete, U-M begins its quest for its 18th Big Ten title this coming Friday and Saturday (April 1-2) at the 2016 Big Ten Championships, hosted by Ohio State.
