MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed the doubles point and got singles wins on courts Nos. 1-4 in a 5-2 triumph over Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon (April 10) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Maize and Blue seized the doubles point for the early lead, winning at No. 2 and No. 1. At No. 2, juniors Jathan Malik and Tyler Gardiner broke early in their match en route to a 6-2 win.
Wisconsin evened it up with a 6-3 win at No. 3, but U-M's top pair of sophomore Runhao Hua and junior/sophomore Alex Knight used an early break at 3-1 and did not look back in a 6-4 victory to clinch the doubles point.
Sophomore Carter Lin wasted no time in putting Michigan's second point on the board, dropping just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3.
Malik followed Lin's win with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 to put Michigan on the brink of victory.
Wisconsin got a point back with a win at No. 6, but Knight clinched the match for Michigan at the top spot. After dropping the second set at love, Knight jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the deciding frame and kept the distance the whole way en route to a 6-1 win to clinch the team victory.
The Badgers got another point with a three-set win at No. 5 as Michigan still led 4-2. Hua supplied the fifth point for Michigan with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 4.
U-M is back in action on Friday (April 15), traveling to Northwestern for a 6 p.m. CDT match.
