
Burk Wins Javelin at Bobcat Classic

SAN MARCO, Texas. -- Competing deep in south-central Texas, the University of Michigan men's track and field began events at Texas State's Bobcat Invitational on Friday (April 29), with a number of throwers competing at Bobcat Field in the javelin and discus.
The highlight of today's events came from senior/junior Stephen Burk, who won the javelin with his throw of 58.80 meters (192-11 ft.). After throwing 58.66 meters on his first attempt and measuring in over 58 meters on his first attempt of the final, Burk launched his top throw of the day on his final attempt.
In the discus, fifth-year senior Derek Sievers led the way in seventh place, landing his second attempt of the final at 52.32 meters (171-08 ft.). The attempt was just over a meter shy of Sievers' PR (53.39 meters; 175-2.25 ft.).
Junior/sophomore Grant Cartwright also earned a top-10 finish, placing ninth with a throw of 50.77 meters (166-07 ft.).
Decathlete senior/junior Steven Bastien competed in both the javelin and discus. In the javelin, his first attempt of the final measured 45.33 meters (148-09 ft.) and he threw 41.01 meters (134-06 ft.) in his second event of the day. Bastien, U-M's heptathlon and decathlon record-holder, is also entered in the long jump and 110-meter hurdles tomorrow (Saturday, April 30).
The second day of action in San Marco, Texas, will be a longer one tomorrow. U-M has athletes in the high jump, long jump, triple jump, hammer throw, shot put, 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Competition kicks off with the women's hammer at 9 a.m. CDT and the men's immediately following.
