CHICAGO, Ill. -- University of Michigan graduate student Jake Rudock joined teammate Graham Glasgow with the Detroit Lions organization, who used the 191st overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to choose the Wolverines' signal caller on Saturday (April 30). Rudock was the 16th pick of the sixth round and the 12th quarterback taken in the draft.
Rudock is the first Wolverine quarterback to be selected in the NFL Draft since Denard Robinson was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fifth round of the 2013 draft. Prior to that time, Chad Henne was chosen by the Miami Dolphins in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Rudock excelled in his lone season as a Wolverine, guiding the team to its 27th double-digit win total in program history. He completed 249-of-389 passes (64.0 percent) for 3,017 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Rudock led the Big Ten Conference and establish the second-highest single-season completion percentage by any U-M quarterback in school history. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten from the coaches and media and was selected as the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient.
He also became the second Michigan quarterback ever to throw for 3,000 yards in a single season, totaling 3,017, second only to John Navarre's 3,331 yards attained during the 2003 season. Rudock closed the year with five straight games of 250 yards passing or more, a Wolverine first, and threw 14 touchdowns to two interceptions while averaging 314.8 yards per game over the span.
A Weston, Florida native, Rudock was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl against Florida. He completed 20-of-31 passes for 278 yards and three TDs against the Gators. Rudock led seven scoring drives in eight possessions, scoring five touchdowns and two field goals in the 41-7 victory.
Rudock was a graduate transfer after earning his degree from the University of Iowa. He finished his collegiate career as a three-year starter at quarterback between the two conference institutions (started 38 games). Rudock completed 666-of-1,080 passes for 7,836 yards and 54 touchdowns. On the ground, he carried the ball 192 times for 560 yards and scored 12 TDs.
In the classroom, Rudock earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades twice (2013, 2014) and was selected to the CoSIDA/Capital One District VI Academic All-America team in 2013. He was named to the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Hampshire Honor Society on Wednesday (April 27).
