PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team was overwhelmed by Rutgers' attack, which included seven goals from junior Kristina Dunphey, falling, 16-6, in its regular-season finale on Saturday (April 30) inside High Point Solutions Stadium.
Junior Kim Coughlan led the Wolverines with four points, on three goals and one assist, and had a hand in each of U-M's first four goals. Coughlan has now had 10 points (9G, 1A) in the last three games and has had six games with three or more goals this season. Junior Anna Schueler has had at least one point in each Big Ten game this season, including one goal and two assists today, to give her 11 points, on seven goals and four assists, in conference play. Schueler and junior Margaret Metzger each recorded five draw controls, marking a career high for Metzger.
The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead by the 24:41 mark before the Wolverines got on the board, as Coughlan fed junior Jess Angerman on the crease for the quick-stick goal at 24:02 to make it 2-1 Rutgers.
The two teams then swapped goals as Coughlan tallied her second point of the day on an unassisted goal after a hard drive from the right elbow (20:57). With Rutgers leading 3-1, the Scarlet Knights strung together five unanswered goals to increase its lead to six, 8-2, with 9:35 remaining in the first half.
With 8:41 on the clock, junior Tess Korten was assessed a yellow card, giving Rutgers the ball, but U-M's aggressive ride led to a caused turnover by Coughlan and gave the Wolverines the ball back. As U-M worked the ball around on the attack, Rutgers was flagged with a yellow card, putting the game at even strength. Coughlan took advantage of the free-position opportunity and converted a goal to halt the Scarlet Knights' run at 7:17 (8-3).
Rutgers' Kristina Dunphey added her fourth goal of the afternoon before the end of the half (1:07) to give Rutgers a 9-3 lead at the break.
Out of the break, Rutgers tacked on three more goals in less than two minutes, including two straight from Kim Kolodny, to go up 12-3 at the 26:50 mark. Coughlan slowed RU's momentum once again, scoring at 26:11, to make it 12-4 Scarlet Knights. Schueler drove from the top, drawing a double team and dumped it to Coughlan on the crease for the quick score.
Rutgers took its largest lead of the game, 16-5, with 3:33 left in the game, but junior Allie Breitfeller tallied the final goal of the game with 20 ticks on the clock on a feed from X from Schueler to make the final 16-6 in favor of the Scarlet Knights.
The Wolverines finished conference play 0-5 and will be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament (May 5-8), which will be hosted at Northwestern's Martin Stadium. The Maize and Blue will face No. 3 seed Northwestern in the first round for the second straight season on Thursday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. CDT. All tournament games will be live on the Big Ten Network.
