MANHEIM, Pa. -- Junior Adam Coon and graduate student Max Huntley of the University of Michigan wrestling team were named to the Division I Individual All-Academic Wrestling Team, as announced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association on Wednesday (May 11).
"One of the rigors of Division I athletics and wrestling specifically are the physical and mental demands," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "It's a testament to our sport that we have academically excelled in a variety of different educational environments. We know how tough the Ivy League schools are and the service academies and research universities all around the country, but to see our wrestling student-athletes thrive in those situations continues to show the value of our sport and the determination these young men have."
To qualify for individual selection, wrestlers must fit one of two criteria -- have at least a 3.2 grade-point average and either have been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total season matches while competing in 60 percent of the team schedule, or have a 3.0 GPA and have earned NCAA All-America honors.
An aerospace engineering major, Coon earned NWCA All-Academic honors for the third time in his career. He posted a 23-3 record in 2015-16 with 17 bonus wins, including a team-best nine falls. Coon again paced the Wolverines at the NCAA Championships, earning his second straight All-America honor with a third-place finish at heavyweight. He claimed runner-up honors at the Big Ten Championships. Coon is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Huntley, a master's student in the School of Public Policy, claimed his first NWCA All-Academic accolade. He posted a 22-7 record in 2015-16, including a near-perfect 13-1 mark in dual meets, and earned bonus points in 14 wins. Despite being hampered by injury in the postseason, Huntley qualified for the NCAA Championships for the fourth time in his career. He was a 2015 NCAA All-American at 197 pounds. He earned his bachelor's degree in English.
The NWCA All-Academic team is comprised of 123 student-athletes. Fifty-five different schools had at least one athlete selected, while 38 programs had multiple selections. Of the 123, 108 of the student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Division I championships, while 36 All-Americans earned All-Academic selections.
The Wolverines concluded the 2015-16 season with a 13-3 record, including an 8-1 mark against Big Ten competition. U-M posted a ninth-place team showing at the NCAA Championships behind the efforts of seven NCAA qualifiers and three All-Americans.
