COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Two runs on five hits was not enough on Sunday (May 15), as the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan baseball team dropped an 8-2 series finale game to the Ohio State Buckeyes at Davis Stadium, capping off a four-game road swing.
Just like the first two games of the series, Michigan scored first on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Freshman Ako Thomas and junior Carmen Benedetti both earned one-out walks, giving the Wolverines two base runners. Sophomore Drew Lugbauer followed with an RBI single to right field, scoring Thomas for the one-run lead.
Ohio State answered back in the bottom of the inning, however, plating a run on two timely hits to tie the score.
Neither team scored for the next three innings, but the Buckeyes rallied for four runs on three hits and two walks in the bottom of the fifth inning to force a four-run lead. In the bottom of the sixth, OSU extended its lead with one more, going up 6-1.
A solo shot from junior Harrison Wenson in the top of the seventh brought the Wolverines within four, but a two-run eighth for the Buckeyes secured a 8-2 lead that Michigan could not overcome.
In total, Michigan tallied a five hits in the outing, walking four times. Senior Cody Bruder was the only Wolverine to tally multiple hits, with two.
Senior lefty Evan Hill started the day for Michigan, tossing 4.1 innings. He surrendered two leadoff hits in the first before retiring 12-consecutive batters but was relieved in the bottom of the fifth after allowing three runs on four OSU hits. His four strikeouts on the day propelled him past the 200 career-strikeout mark, and he now ranks 10th all-time at Michigan with 203 career strikeouts.
Sophomores Ryan Nutof and Bryan Pall and freshman William Tribucher closed out the game for the Wolverines, tossing a combined 3.2 innings and recording three strikeouts. The trio allowed four runs on just two hits.
The Wolverines will return to action with a midweek non-conference matchup on Tuesday (May 17) against the visiting Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The contest will serve as a Book Drive for the Boys and Girls Club of Flint, and first pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Fans who bring a book to the game will receive free admission.
