TULSA, Okla. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team will have two singles participants and one doubles team in the 2016 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships as the draws were announced on Tuesday (May 24).
Senior Ronit Yurovsky received a No. 9-16 seed and will face off against No. 22 Joana Vale Costa of LSU on Wednesday (May 25) at 1:30 p.m. CDT. It is the second time this season the two will square off as Yurovsky took a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship (Feb. 7). Yurovsky is making her fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship, joining Emina Bektas (2012-15) as the only Wolverines in school history to accomplish the feat.
Freshman Brienne Minor will face No. 8 seed Sinead Lohan of the University of Miami on Wednesday at 11 a.m. CDT in the first round. Minor and Lohan just faced each other in the team tournament, with Lohan coming away with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. Minor joins Bektas and Yurovsky as freshmen to participate in this event.
Minor and sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook will compete in the doubles tournament, which is a 32-person draw that begins on Thursday (May 26). Match time will be announced following the singles matches. The duo will face No. 5-8 seed Pleun Burgmans and Alizee Michaud from Auburn.
The individual appearances come on the heels of Michigan's first-ever appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. U-M knocked off No. 7 seed Miami in the third round before falling to No. 15 Stanford in the quarters by a 4-3 margin to finish the season with a 23-7 record. It is the ninth straight season that Michigan has sent at least one player to the singles tournament and the seventh straight season for a doubles team to make the tournament.
