ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Senior co-captain Cindy Ofili of the University of Michigan women's track and field team was recognized as the Big Ten Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday (May 4).
Ofili was given the honor after successfully defending her 100-meter hurdles crown at Drake Relays last weekend (April 30). She ran 12.90 seconds to win her race and also timed the fastest mark in the 100-meter dash prelims one day earlier (11.57).
Now with titles in 2015 and 2016, Ofili and her sister Tiffany (Ofili) Porter (2008-09; 2011) are two of five women in Drake Relays history to repeat their event titles in the 100-meter hurdle race.
This week's award marks Ofili's 12th career conference award and her fifth of 2016 to date. She earned the recognition on Jan. 27 and Feb. 10, 2016, of the indoor season and also on April 4 and 20th of the outdoor season. Of her 12 Big Ten honors, five have come in the indoor season and seven have come during the outdoor season. So far in 2016, she is the third Wolverine to win the award (Jamie Morrissey; Dec. 9, 2015 and Erin Finn; Jan. 13, 2016).
In addition to collecting another conference accolade, Ofili's name reappeared on the women's Bowerman Watch List last month, marking her consideration among the 10 women viewed as contenders for track and field's highest honor. Of the 10 named to this month's watch list, only Ofili managed to break through and have herself added to the list.
The Wolverines will travel to Toledo, Ohio, for the Toledo Invitational this weekend (Thursday-Friday, May 5-6). Ofili will be off this weekend to rest in preparation for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, an approach many of Michigan's top athletes are taking.
