ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Juniors Kim Coughlan and Madeline Dion of the University of Michigan women's lacrosse team were named members of the All-Big Ten Team, the conference announced today Wednesday (May 4), marking the first two players in program history to earn the honor.
Coughlan, a dynamic midfielder from Port Jefferson, New York, is leading the Wolverines with 39 points on 34 goals and five assists this season. She is two points shy of hitting the 100-career point milestone, as she has recorded 86 goals and 12 assists over the last three seasons. She has tallied at least one point in 16 of 17 games this season. After having a 13-game point streak dating back to the 2015 season snapped at Northwestern (April 7) and missing the Niagara (April 12) game due to injury, Coughlan has scored nine goals in the last three games. The general studies major also leads the team with 10 free-position goals, which rank fourth in the Big Ten, and is second in draw controls with 33.
Dion, a sociology major and Annapolis, Maryland, native, has played in all 17 games this season in a defensive-midfield role and is often tasked with marking the opposing team's top attacker. Dion has had at least one caused turnover in 11 games this season and is second overall on the team with 24, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten. She is quickly approaching her own school record for caused turnovers in a season of 27, which she set in 2015. Dion has also recorded 20 ground balls, 11 draw controls and three goals.
In addition to Coughlan and Dion earning Big Ten honors, fellow junior Emily Braun also received Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. A mainstay on U-M's defense for the last three seasons, Braun currently leads the team with 26 ground balls and has also registered 15 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers this season.
Michigan (6-11) earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament and will take on No. 3 Northwestern (8-8) on Thursday (May 5) at 1:30 p.m. CDT at Northwestern's Martin Stadium. The game will be live on BTN. [ Game Preview ]
