Final Round: Saturday, May 7 -- at NCAA Alabama Regional (Shoal Creek, Ala.), 7:30 a.m. CDT (tee times)
SHOAL CREEK, Ala. -- It was moving day at the Shoal Creek Country Club after the University of Michigan women's golf team posted a 305 team total today (Friday, May 6) and vaulted six positions to seventh place after day two of the NCAA Alabama Regional with a 616 total. The Wolverines are just two shots back of sixth place and advancing to the NCAA Finals.
With 18 holes remaining, the Wolverines will be paired with Clemson and Vanderbilt for the final round and will tee off No. 1 starting at 7:30 a.m. CDT. The top six teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team will move on to the finals, to be held Friday through Wednesday, May 20-25, at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
"We fought hard all day long and kept ourselves in position all day," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "This course requires lots of patience, but there are birdies if you play smart. We capitalized on some of those today and also used some additional course knowledge from yesterday.
"Tomorrow is one of the most exciting days in college golf. We are going to enjoy the moment, knowing that something extra special is not required to advance. The team is really excited for this great opportunity and experience tomorrow."
After opening yesterday's (Thursday, May 5) gusty first round with a 311, the Wolverines closed the day tied for 13th. With the challenge of trying to move up to reach a top-six finish, senior Catherine Peters once again took the lead for the Maize and Blue and posted a two-over 74.
She continued her success on the back nine following her two-under performance yesterday with an even-par start to today's round. Turning to the front side, she used two of her three total birdies -- Nos. 5 and 9 -- to erase two of her four bogeys and finish at two over. With her 151 total, she moved into the top 20 individuals as she is tied for 15th.
Sophomore Megan Kim used a U-M second-day best four birdies to move into a tie for 30th after she fired a second-round 76, putting her at 154. Junior Grace Choi is only a shot back of Kim, following a 77, giving her a 155 total and positioning her tied for 40th.
Rounding out U-M's second-day regional scoring are sophomore Emily White (78-79) and freshman Elodie Van Dievoet (79-78), who are both tied for 53rd at 157.
